Excavations Begin

Excavations have now begun in the shadow of the Peñon of Ifach that are aimed at finding out more about a medieval home that was found on the slopes of the Rock last year. According to Esteban Gonzalez Pons, the Conseller for the Territory, these latest excavations that are being conducted in collaboration with representatives from the Alicante Archaeological Museum MARQ, will last six weeks. Under scrutiny is the house that was built in the thirteenth century and is believed to have belonged to Admiral Roger de Lluria, the Count of Cocentaina, who lived there between 1297 and 1356.

Memories

The luxury home outside Denia set amidst high pine trees known as the Tossalet de Girona, has an interesting story to tell, for in 1940 it belonged to Johannes Bernhardt, who at one stage was the most important representative of Hitler in Spain. Bernhardt, who was born in East Prussia, was working in Tetuan for an import/export company, and amongst the Germans there at the time, there was considerable support for Francisco Franco, and as a result he flew to Austria to meet with the Fuhrer to seek his support for Franco in the Spanish Civil War effort.
