The Americas Cup Management Committee, which is the main entity in the organization of the Americas Cup races in Valencia, has sent a registered letter to Spanish broadcaster RTVE stating that it requires more and better coverage of the races.
The letter read in part: “What you should undertake is to fulfill your commitments” and its existence was revealed yesterday by Valencia Mayoress Rita Barbera, who added some highly acid criticism of RTVE for failing to undertake adequate coverage of the event ‘in yet another attempt to try and sink the prestige of Valencia’. Speaking later to journalists, she added that the letter from the Americas Cup Management ‘is by no means polite at all’. Mrs. Barbera also stated that ACM had paid eight million Euros to RTVE that the give the event adequate coverage, ‘but all they have done is put it on a digital sports channel, when they had the obligation to put in on their second channel that has a much wider coverage’. Mrs. Barbera added that the ‘best of all options’ was for RTVE to copy Canal 9, the local TV station, who had created a special section in its newscasts for the Americas Cup.
