Born in Valencia

Valencia was the scene yesterday of the creation of a “Truth Commission” that is to examine ‘the depths of the long years that Spain was under the rule of General Francisco Franco’.  Created with the support of Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, the  Commission members come from veteran international Socialist parties and include Danielle Miterrand, Francesco Cossiga, Mario Soares, Jorge Semprun, Gabriel Jackson and Federico Mayor Zaragoza, who, curiously enough, have not undertaken the creation of similar Commissions in their respective countries. Mr. Cossiga yesterday expressed the belief that after the Transition to Democracy in Spain ‘there was an unwritten agreement not to speak of the past and that this pact would last forever’. Many analysts have stated that with the creation of this Commission, Spain has now put itself on the same levels as El Salvador and Peru.

Memories

The luxury home outside Denia set amidst high pine trees known as the Tossalet de Girona, has an interesting story to tell, for in 1940 it belonged to Johannes Bernhardt, who at one stage was the most important representative of Hitler in Spain. Bernhardt, who was born in East Prussia, was working in Tetuan for an import/export company, and amongst the Germans there at the time, there was considerable support for Francisco Franco, and as a result he flew to Austria to meet with the Fuhrer to seek his support for Franco in the Spanish Civil War effort.
