Christmas in Alcoy

Christmas in Alcoy

From 26 November, Alcoy comes alive with the spirit of Christmas!

The Nativity Scene of Tirisiti in Alcoy announces the proximity of the Christmas festivities. The performance will take place in the wooden hut that is set up every year in the Jardín de la Glorieta (Summerhouse Garden), in the street known as Carrer Sant Nicolau.

It is a centenary tradition that is held in high esteem by the people of Alcoy, who each year enjoy the adventures of Tirisiti.  It is a theatrical performance mixing aspects of olden day customs into the craziest of stories.

The performance is undertaken with peu i vareta puppets, which are puppets set up on vertical rods and that run across the stage using some guiding wires strung between the various different stage elements.

The characters are vocalised through the use of a metallic reed and the role of narrator stimulates the participation of the public in the dialogue and the Mickey-taking of the characters with whom they might sing along with some of the cançoneta (little song), nadalenca (Christmas carols) or Alcoy carols. The performance lasts about half an hour and begins with the well-known verse of the Alcoy Christmas carol: A la run, a la run, figues i panses i apaguen la llum.
