Antarctica Exhibition at City of Arts and Sciences Museum

Antarctica Exhibition at City of Arts and Sciences Museum

Antarctica is the subject of an exhibition at the City of Arts and Sciences Museum in Valencia.

An exhibition in the Museum, the screening of the film La aventura de Shackleton in the Hemisfèric and an example of the work carried out by Spanish scientists in Antarctica, bring the capital city of the Turia closer to the southern continent.

This is the first time that the scientific research and leisure complex has carried out a joint action between the Museum, the Hemisfèric and the Oceanogràfic in order to share activities with the same theme: Antarctica.

CAC reveals all the secrets of an expedition, which set out for the southern continent in August 1914, just days before the outbreak of the First World War, with the sole objective of completing the crossing of the continent on foot. The adventure of the legendary explorer Shackleton and his crew of twenty-seven men in Antarctica, lasted for nearly two years. The expedition managed to survive in spite of the fact that their ship, the Endurance, was trapped in the ice.

The Príncipe Felipe Museum of Sciences is the first centre in Spain to house the exhibition Atrapados en el Hielo,  (Trapped in the Ice), a display first held by the American Museum of Natural History in  New York,  in 1999.

Atrapados en el Hielo relates the adventure of Shackleton from a scientific and contemporary point of view. The display, which has a total of 167 photographs both in black and white and in colour, presents the most complete collection of pictures taken by Frank Hurley, the photographer of the expedition, ever shown to date.

To round off this total experience of Antarctica, visitors can watch the first-ever screening in Spain of the IMAX film La Aventura de Shackleton, in the Hemisfèric. This film relives the journeys and difficulties that faced Shackleton and his men, with the recording of images of the places where the story happened: South Georgia Island, Elephant Island, and the Weddell Sea. In addition, you can see the original photographs and the 35-millimetre film taken by Frank Hurley, which gives the viewers a personal look at the experiences of the 28 men and their struggle to survive.

The viewing sessions will be from Monday to Sunday at 13:00, with an additional showing at 21.00 on Friday and Saturday.
