Requena Wine Festival 2007
Requena celebrates La Feria y fiesta de la Vendimia, it's annual wine harvest festival from 22 August to 2 September 2007.
The Wine Harvest Festival stems from the old festivities in which the entrance of the autumn and the time of the grape harvest were celebrated. This festival was born of these simple festivities and it serves as a promotion of the excellent wines of the land. It was 1948 when seven people decided to try to unite their fellow citizens in the difficult post-war years through this festival. Without a doubt those men were ignorant of the fact that their initiative gave birth to the first wine harvest festival in Spain, declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in 1964.
The event also gives visitors the opportunity to taste wine from the first pressing, as well as featuring a procession with offerings of fruit and flowers. Drinking the wines and accompanying them with the Requena sausage or other typical dishes, such as morteruelo (a type of mince pie) or ajo arriero (cod stew with red peppers).
