Moors and Christians in Elda
Elda welcomes everyone to their festivities of Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians) from the 29th May to the 2nd of June 2008.
The inhabitants of Elda are true fans of festivities, music and gunpowder, and will wage war on boredom. Christian and Moorish alardos (battles), embajadas, (meeting between envoys), the firing of harquebusiers in battle, entrance processions and estafetas fill both locals and strangers with amazement at festivities that have existed for more than half a century.
On 29th May, at eight o’clock in the evening, the festivity begins with the entrance parade of the bands and the traditional retreta call. The following day, the saint is accompanied to the hermitage of St Anthony, and the hermit is taken to the archiprestal church. The Moor and Christian alardo, or battle, the envoy meeting, the storming of the castle and the majestic entrance parade of the Moors are some of the acts that take place at the weekend.
The Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians) of Elda are a symbol of the past, a historical reflection that parades through the streets and reminds us of the Reconquest. The Alborada firework display, on the 2nd, will put the finishing touches to the traditional celebrations of Elda.
