Sinkhole opens up in Alzira

The residents of Calle Dr Ferran in Alzira were astonished to discover an enormous hole in their street some fifty metres wide and 13 deep, as a result of some work that was being carried out.

As a result, the emergency services removed the inhabitants of six nearby buildings, and several ground floor shops, with about one hundred residents being sent to a nearby hotel. Following their relocation, several locals stated that during the past few days, they had felt  ‘trembling similar to an earthquake’; whilst several observers stated that the creation of the sinkhole was probably accelerated due to the recent rains.

One of the main factors resulting in no one being injured was due to the works foreman who noticed cracks appearing in the street, and roped in some local to help him blockade the street whilst he called the local police.

The street is one of the busiest in Alzira, with thousands of cars going along it each day, as well as being on one of the main bus routes, and the shortest way for ambulances to get to the La Ribera Hospital. The water and gas supplies were immediately cut, but it took a bit longer for the mains drainage to be diverted, which in effect meant that the fire brigade had to use pumps to evacuate the sewage, whilst some heavy rocks were place in the sinkhole to prevent any further damage.

In comparison to the El Carmel sinkhole in Barcelona, which terrified residents and resulted in great confusion, the Alzira incident was dealt with in a controlled and unified way, with Security Councilor Raul Ull being present as soon as the incident began and coordinating all the security and other efforts. One of those who was forced to be evacuated to an hotel stated: “We were very concerned at first, but Mayoress Elena Bastidas and Raul Ull were simply wonderful”.
